The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety, has launched a 'Dust Kills' campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of dust.

From May to July 2023, the HSE is embarking on a nationwide inspection campaign to target construction workers’ lung health. Whether or not your construction site is inspected, you are legally obliged to assess the risks associated with dust and implement appropriate control measures in order to protect site workers, visitors and neighbours from its deadly effects.

At Corgin, we offer installed and mobile dust suppression equipment for both hire and purchase. We understand the importance of protecting the health of those working on site and want to help you do the same. Our blog post on reducing silica dust explains how you can work through the hierarchy of risk controls using the ERICPD acronym to mitigate the risks associated with dust.

Dust Kills

The HSE team will conduct inspections to ensure effective control measures have been implemented to protect workers from inhaling construction dust such as Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS), and wood dust. Additionally, they will verify the identification and removal of asbestos-containing materials to reduce any potential exposure risks.

Silica dust has come under scrutiny in recent years as it is particularly harmful and can cause irreversible damage to the lungs. When inhaled, microscopic particles of silica dust embed themselves in the lung tissue, causing inflammation and scarring. Over time, this leads to impaired lung function, and an increased risk of lung cancer, silicosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
